Gilbert Kong is a Cuban American composer with musical roots in improve and experimental music. A self taught guitarist and composer influenced early on by the work of Harry Partch, Steve Reich, and the no wave movement in 1970’s New York. He earned a Bachelor degree in composition from the New World School of the Arts in Fred De Sena’s studio and there was exposed to electro/acoustic music, chamber music, and opera.

He has a Master’s degree from the Florida International University where he studied composition with Dr. Orlando Garcia and electronic music/composition with Dr. Jacob Sudol. There he would be further immersed in the world of new music especially the works of Gérard Grisey, Helmut Lachenmann and Robert Ashley.

His music is exploratory tending towards extended techniques for dramatic effect and polyrhythms.  Although rhythm and motivic sequences have dominated Gilbert’s music in the past, he is working towards a less “recognizable phrase structure” type music where text is the focus.  Allowing for longer more breathe like musical phrases that support the ideas of the text.

Symbiotic Simians

Like many local musicians, Mike Montero finds the Miami rock scene a challenge, but he does detect a pulse. "I believe that a scene for live original bands does exist in Miami, but it's very underground, and the only way to get to it is with a 200-pound jackhammer," he says, noting that what's missing is a "hub" for live rock acts. "There's no single, central live music 'alley' here where one can hop from bar to bar to check out a bunch of bands all in one night. If Fort Lauderdale can do it, why can't Miami?" and that's where Symbiotic Simians comes in adding to the collection of sound Miami has to offer.
